In 1971 I began participating in amateur radio contesting, also known as “Radio-Sport.” Like many other facets of the hobby, contesting is not for everyone, but any licensed ham operator can participate. While I don’t enter contests to win, I do challenge myself with personal goals I want to achieve. My “Lil Pistol” station cannot compete with the likes of “big gun” stations running amps, towers and massive antennas.
In 1977, I became a member of the Northern California Contest Club, which was founded in 1970 and had many members as it has grown through the years following. The Contest Club had instilled many goals that were much like mine:
* To promote the fun, satisfaction and competitive thrill of radio contesting. * To help our members develop their operating and technical skills to become better contester's. * To win the club competition of major amateur radio contests.
Since retiring and moving from California, I still contest and strongly support the NCCC.
